Year 13 Drama students attended a production of The Bacchae at The National Theatre on Wednesday 1st October.
It was a thrilling adaptation by Nima Taleghani of Euripides Greek tragedy which allowed a strong female chorus to take us through the eventful return of Dionysus to Thebes seeking recognition from his family. The students were blown away with the production, commenting it was “Extraordinary”, “Captivating” and “Relatable to a contemporary Audience”. The students will use this experience of live theatre to debate in their A Level exam the value of using old theatrical material when trying to build younger audience attendance.
The students were exemplary and were upgraded by the National to the best seats in the house!

On Monday, our Year 12 Sociology Students had the opportunity to hear from Bruce Balden, a participant in the UP series, through Teams. Here are two student reports :
“The Up series was created in 1964 by Michael Apted, with the first instalment ‘Seven Up’. There were originally 14 participants, who were asked a series of questions based on proving the idea “Give me the child until he is seven, and I will give you the man”. The series continued every seven years with the last instalment in 2019 called 63 Up. When it comes to sociology it is an extremely important study, not only as it is a strong example of a longitudinal study but also as it explores the life courses of individuals from varied social backgrounds and how this has affected their opinions on social issues and their access to opportunities. Also the study can be used to explore how the media has changed over time and its changing effects on the participants. It has been recently announced that there will be one final episode of this series, being released in 2026, now that the participants are now 70.”
“As a class we were fortunate enough to talk to Bruce Balden and ask him questions about his time on the series. When he was first introduced on the series he went to a prestigious boarding school but aspired to help those less fortunate and become a missionary or a school teacher in disadvantaged areas. After graduating Oxford university, he went on to teach at a comprehensive school in London’s East End, he then moved to Bangladesh where he taught maths in a local school and helped develop their teacher training courses. The series explored his personal life and his journey getting married and having two sons but also his difficult relationship with his father who was living in Zimbabwe. When asked about his experiences on the Up series Bruce spoke positively and how he felt comfortable to be himself and answer honestly. When it comes to his time on the show he believes he was accurately represented and that in his opinion he can see the similarities between him at 7 and who he is now.”

On Monday 30 June, myself and fellow Year 10s visited Rothamsted Research for an organised tour. Our tour started with a visit to their Sample Archive where we saw hundreds of thousands of soil and crop samples over the years. There were some samples older than 180 years, and interestingly the samples from the war years were stored in dry milk tins instead of the usual glass bottles. Rothamsted’s fieldwork includes a giant specialised insect vacuum cleaner which collects insect samples to look at different insect species and the populations of each. I found the visit engaging and thought some of the research and technology they have at Rothamsted is very innovative. I especially enjoyed learning about the different kinds of genetic modification they do on plants to maximise food production and meet every kind of need. Overall, I’d say it was a very fascinating visit and I learnt about a whole area of research I hardly knew existed, and I’m glad I went on the trip.

On Thursday 19th June, Year 8 and Year 9 Industrial cadets attended GSK Ware to celebrate their achievements.
Students have been working hard over the past few months on their innovative Industrial Cadets Bronze projects. Year 8 students designed a wellbeing garden and year 9 students designed sustainable theme park.
Each team had the opportunity to present their projects in person to a panel of GSK assessors, and they truly wowed the room! The event also featured a talk from EDT CEO Julie Feest, an inspiring Q&A with a GSK panel, and a networking session.

Exam students in Drama have been very busy with examinations over the last few weeks! Year 11 have now completed their entire course and Year 10 and 12 have been assessed on their performance units for Devising Drama. The studio has been booked out constantly since February and the hard work and time has now paid off. Please see a few images from recent performance exams in Drama.

GCSE Component 3 Texts in Practice Exam
Year 11 students performed two scripted extracts to a visiting examiner, each extract was up to 20 mins in length, many of our students really pushed themselves to maximise potential marks by performing the full 40 mins, meaning they could communicating the majority of the playscript offering full character development for their exam.
Texts performed were; Daisy Pulls it Off, Girls Like That, Teechers, Dixon and Daughters, A Curious Incident of the Dog of the Night-time and Ladies Day.
GCSE Component 2 Devising Drama
Year 10 Students have worked incredibly hard with a challenging quick turnaround from their Mock examination which provided them with detailed feedback to address in a week with many group members away on international trips! The final performances were re-worked and developed, leading to an improvement of grades across the class.
A Level Component 1 Devising Drama
Year 12 A Level Drama and Theatre students performed their final Devising exam on Monday 19th May. The students produced some excellent thought-provoking drama that communicated beautifully what they set out to achieve. Students responded to original stimulus of Berkoff’s translation of Franz Kafka’s Metamorphosis, from here they delved into research inspired by themes from the playtext. The students worked with Frantic Assembly who led a masterclass with them in February to inspire the use of physical Theatre to explore meaning in performance. The students have been on a journey with these works for some weeks and we are very proud of their final work.

MBDA is a well-known company that operates globally. It develops and sells a variety of missile systems and related technologies. These products are used by different military forces and government agencies. MBDA has built a reputation for designing advanced missile systems that meet the needs of wars. Its mission includes providing reliable missile technology to countries around the world. The company often supports nations that have been under-equipped or lack advanced defense tools. During conflicts or wars, MBDA supplies missiles and technology to help these countries defend themselves and stabilize the region. The company’s goal is to ensure even smaller or less developed nations have access to effective defense systems as well as protecting our own country. Each missile was described as very expensive, some even selling for millions.
What did we do over there-
We got on a small minibus that took ten of us straight to the MBDA building. The ride was very fun, and we did a mini karaoke. When we pulled up, we headed inside and signed in at the reception desk. After signing in, we were handed a lanyard. Wearing it made us feel important, like we belonged there, which was a big boost of confidence for everyone.
Our first stop was a spacious hall where a series of talks were waiting. Some of the speakers shared stories about how they first got involved with MBDA. They explained how they started in very different careers but eventually came here. We listened carefully, and after, we asked questions about the jobs, and sometimes got a bit off track with their favourite books, etc. It was inspiring to hear real people share their experiences and see how a career in engineering or tech could come true.
After the talks, we were taken on a special tour to see some of their really cool rooms. These spaces looked like giant gaming setups, with multiple screens and all kinds of confusing buttons. It was fascinating to see the high-tech equipment and learn how these rooms help create advanced technology.
As a fun part of the visit, they handed out small fidgets to everyone. These little toys kept our hands busy and gave us something to play with during lunch. They also set up a quiz, testing our knowledge about multiple things. We had to answer questions like “Who made the internet?” or “How tall is the empire state building?”.
Later, we got hands-on with a teamwork challenge. Using colourful plastic pieces, we worked together to build a bridge. Our goal was to create something strong enough to hold 7 cans of fizzy drinks. We knew that triangles were a stable source. Some of us discovered that wider bases or using more pieces in certain areas helped improve strength. It was a great way to learn about engineering ideas like balance, weight distribution, and material strength, all while working as a team. We managed to hold all cans, yet found that we were cheated unfairly since we didn’t win, yet we should have. You can succeed, yet still fail.
This whole experience gave us a clear look at what goes on inside MBDA. From the talks and tours to building challenges and fun quizzes, every part showed us how important creativity and teamwork are in this field. It was more than just a visit; it was a chance to see real careers in action and understand the kind of work that makes new technology possible.

The week beginning 19th May parents, friends and staff were delighted to attend one of our enjoyable Afternoon Teas prepared and hosted by our Year 10 GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition students. As always it was lovely to be able to welcome visitors into the department. Working under strict exam conditions the students baked all morning producing delicious breads, cakes and scones. We are delighted to report that our students coped really well working under the intense ‘Bake Off’ pressure. Their freshly baked products were finished and presented to a professional standard. The students are justly proud of their fantastic results and received extremely positive feedback from our guests on the day for their fabulous food.
A special thank you goes to the Art Department for the loan of the student artwork and to Ms P. Scoulding with help from the Design Technology teachers for setting the lovely scene in our Afternoon Tea room.
