Presdales School Sixth Form Guidance Notes 2021-2023
For entry to the Sixth Form at Presdales School in September 2021, please read the option subjects from which you are able to choose the subjects you wish to study, and submit a completed application form by e-mail before 12 February 2021. Each subject is offered as a full, linear two-year Advanced Level course, examinable at the end of Year 13 in June 2023. The entry requirements for each course are detailed in the Entry Requirement section of our website, together with a brief description of the course.
We require you to select three subjects at Advanced Level to study in both Years 12 and 13 (four if you also wish to study Further Mathematics as an additional A level and meet the entry requirements for that course).
Finally, you will also be required to study English Language GCSE and/or Mathematics GCSE, as an additional course(s) if you have not been successful in obtaining at least a grade 4 in each of these subjects respectively.
Once the applications have been received, option blocks will be carefully constructed to meet as many student option choices as possible. The school reserves the right not to run a course if the numbers choosing a particular subject are too low to make that subject viable.
If there is great demand for a particular course we will select students on the basis of their preferences stated on the application form (e.g. if it is your first choice you are more likely to be admitted to that course than if it is your third). If you hand the application form in late (i.e. after 11th December 2020), or change one of your course choices at a later date, you will have a lower priority for getting a place on the course(s) in question.
Core Curriculum
Everyone in Year 12 will study a core curriculum as part of the Sixth Form enrichment programme. This will include a Sixth Form sports programme (which can by choice lead to a qualification(s) in Sports Leadership) and careers programme. In addition, you may apply to study for an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), on an agreed topic of your choosing, to be completed under the guidance of a study tutor.
If you are required to study an additional GCSE subject or choose to study Further Mathematics as a fourth A level choice, however, you may not be able to do all of the elements of this core curriculum.
Federation Common Option Blocks
As a member of the Hertford and Ware Federation of Schools, Presdales students may be able to study a subject which is not available to them at Presdales at another Federation school (Chauncy, Richard Hale, Sele or Simon Balle). Transport arrangements will be organised and paid for by Presdales.
The subjects available will be finalised during the spring term and all applicants to our Sixth Form informed. They will then be able to amend their choices as appropriate, subject to course availability on a “first-come, first-served” basis.
Additional Subject Notes
Further Mathematics: To take an A level in Further Mathematics you also need to commit yourself to take Mathematics A level.
Business/Economics: Students should not choose to study both Business and Economics.
Process
After you have submitted your application form there will be time for the Sixth Form curriculum to be considered by school management with a view to finalising the block structure and constructing the timetable. At the end of February/beginning of March, you will be asked to attend a meeting to clarify the choices made (Covid-19 dependent). If you subsequently change your mind about any of your option choices, you must write to Mrs Preshous, Sixth Form Administrator, detailing the requested change(s), or alternatively, let us know on joining the Sixth Form at the start of September 2021.
We look forward to receiving your application form.
