Staff Wellbeing Mosaic Sessions

November 7, 2025/in Art /by Presdales School

Over two lunchtimes, we came together to enjoy strawberries, laughter, and creativity while designing and making our very own mosaic coasters.

Some staff were a little unsure about their creative skills at first, but as you can see, the results were stunning and wonderfully unique! Everyone achieved something beautiful and experienced a moment of relaxation and mindfulness — a welcome break in our busy days.

I’d love to run more sessions in the New Year and see even more of our staff’s creative talents shine.

A big thank you to everyone who joined in and made it such an enjoyable experience!

Edible news from the Russian Department

During the first half-term of this year, the Russian department was very busy sampling traditional foods favoured by many Russians.

At the end of September, members of Years 10, 11, and 12 visited Harrow School one Saturday for a ‘Day at the Dacha’ event. Students of Russian at Harrow School delivered presentations on life at the ‘Dacha’ over the last 100 years, and our students were entertained by a balalaika-playing singer who taught them some simple folk songs and games. This drummed up quite an appetite for traditional Pirozhki (pies) of all shapes and fillings.

More recently, Year 8 had the opportunity to put some food vocabulary into practice with the ‘кафе’ (café) lesson, during which they tried dumplings (pelmeni), buckwheat (grechka), and black bread, among other savoury items. They also practised ordering Russian sweets, biscuits, and marshmallow treats from each other and reacted to the tastes in Russian!

Very impressive! Well done to the few that dared to try everything!

News from English

A Level English students watched a poetry performance by Patience Agbabi, here are some of their thoughts and reflections on the event:

“She undercovers social problems like racism, homophobia, and class differences all while still telling a story.” “I honestly think this opportunity was a great learning experience and I would love to have another opportunity to listen to another poet, and learn about their poetry.”

“Give me a word… I’ll give you a word.” “The way she played with rhythm and tone was captivating — I didn’t expect poetry to sound like that.”

“Patience Agbabi delivered an inspiring and motivating talk that makes her layered and complex writing seem like a universal gift that we all have the potential to enhance if we desire and endeavor to achieve it.”

“Agbabi spoke about her poems, the meaning behind them, and how to apply that to our own analysis and poetry.”

“It was inspiring to see someone so passionate about her craft and to understand how her poetry connects to modern themes.”

“We were also able to ask questions to which she gave insightful answers to and demonstrated what it was like being a poet and how to get involved.”

“Hearing her perform her poems brought them to life and made the messages even more powerful.”

“Patience Agbabi is an inspirational poet and writer celebrated for paying equal homage to performance and literature which I had the pleasure of meeting and hearing her linguistically rhythmed and satisfying works.”

“The recent poetry reading by Patience Agbabi was a truly dynamic and inspirational event for the 64 students we brought to the event.”

“She delivered some of her poems and projects in a very engaging way, and it really brought out the meaning behind her words.”

“It was amazing to hear her older and newer poems side by side and to see how her voice as a writer has evolved.”

“The poetry session was a great learning experience as it allowed me to immerse myself in the poetry and I could absorb the effects of how Patience Agbabi pronounced and spoke the words, allowing me to better understand her poems, particularly Eat Me, which we are studying.”

“I had the opportunity to go to Patience Agbabi’s poetry conference and it opened my eyes to how poetry can be performed and interpreted.”

“Patience read and performed her poems in such an enthusiastic and captivating way that we were able to follow through and see the passion that she has for poetry.” “Seeing Patience has helped me to understand the power that poetry and the arts have on us and how it can be used to express everything in life.”

“She was engaging and friendly, encouraging audience participation and provoking deep thought and conversation around some of the themes of her poems.” “I particularly enjoyed the performance of ‘Josephine Baker finds herself’ because of its interesting structure. The poem is mirrored and therefore the second half has a changed meaning from the first half even though the same words are used.” “Going forward, I hope to be able to put some of what I learnt into practice when I write songs.”

“It was very interesting to understand her thoughts and inspirations around the poem, and see how an idea that she had has grown because of other people reading the poem themselves, and coming up with their own interpretations.” “She was a very passionate and enthusiastic speaker, who really seemed to love her work and what she does, which was very inspirational.” “I had never heard this style of poetry before and it was very interesting to discover a new form that creates such a powerful impact.”

“Agbabi’s confident performance radiated passion, making this whole experience incredibly inspiring and rewarding.” “She offered detailed advice for aspiring writers as well as talked through her development as a writer and how she got to where she is now, which I found really helpful in regard to what I need to do to get to that stage in my career.” “Agbabi’s poems discussed a variety of meaningful topics and were performed in such a way that made it feel personal, pushing a sense of connectivity with both her and everyone in the audience.”

“It was fascinating to hear directly from the poet her thoughts behind her poetry and the meanings were even more apparent through her own readings of the poem.” “She was also kind towards us as young people and made the session even more interesting through her interactive nature with us.” “This poetry session I will use as an influence on my creativity in the future and an influence on what I choose as inspirations.”

“Her passion and love for literature evident in her excited tone.” “I didn’t feel as though I was just listening to poetry being read, I left feeling more educated and aware of humanity.” “One thing I will most certainly take away from this experience is Patience’s advice on how to start writing — for me this is the most challenging part, so I will definitely try to implement her mentality of writing about ordinary things until it begins to merge itself into a story of sorts.”

“She approached these subjects with sensitivity and an insight which I found very moving.” “They are clearly conveyed in her poem ‘Ufo woman’, which explores these very personal aspects of humanity with both poignant and universal emotions.” “I will think of her words of wisdom when reading poetry from now on!”

“The pride she holds towards her poetry and writing is truly amazing and inspiring.” “I especially enjoyed hearing Agbabi perform her poem ‘Eat Me’ as it is one that I have studied at A-Level and I found it to be very interesting hearing her perform it in person.” “In the future, I will add the same pride and honour over my writing that Agbabi does to her own.”

“Her rap-based poetry encourages discussion about real-world issues, as well as her own personal experiences – she doesn’t shy away from them, no matter how uncomfortable or disturbing they are.” “Her semantic fields and extended metaphors were effective and inspiring, so I would like to incorporate that, too.” “She has definitely encouraged me to be more playful with my own writing.”

“As a whole I was in awe of her passion and confidence when performing her poems from memory.” “Her speech was engaging and effortless as she spoke, with her poems both rhyming and rapping, making the experience satisfying.” “Her work has this remarkable effect on the people who listen.”

“What really caught my attention was the way she read her poetry. She didn’t just read it but she used rhythm and emotions to add more meaning.” “It helped me realise how much more effective poetry is when it is read aloud as opposed to being read in your head.” “Having listened to her, I feel more inspired to include emotion and rhythm in my own work.”

“Even though poetry isn’t on my A-Level spec, this was still an insightful experience; one that I thoroughly enjoyed.” “It gave me a chance to hear how they’re supposed to be read, with their meaning expressed through Patience’s voice, and how her pauses sounded so natural.” “It was overall a rather revelatory experience into her poetry, one that I’m grateful to have been able to attend.”

Year 9 Battlefields Trip

My report on the Battlefields Trip for Year 9:

On Friday morning, at 5:40 am, 79 students from Year 9 got on coaches to travel all the way to Belgium. During this, we went on the euro-tunnel, crossed through France and ate far too many sweets to wake us up; the coach ride back and forth was long and came in at 8 hours road time but we all had a good time with each other and got to know everyone better and even make friends with people we’ve never spoken to.

Our itinerary for the trip set us up to go to three cemeteries and sights of the First World War on the first day through Belgium. Firstly, we visited Lijssenthoek CWGC Cemetery. Here is the burial site of Nurse Nellie Spindler (one of the only two female casualties that happened in the First World War) and has over 10,000 graves of soldiers from the Allied Forces. With that, we also visited the Essex Farm CWGC Advanced Dressing Station where soldiers who had been wounded in battle would come first for medical attention before field hospitals; this was also the site of 15 year old Valentine Strudwick’s grave, who the teachers gave us the task of finding . To see our last cemetery on the first day, we travelled to Brandhoek New Military Cemetery, where Nellie Spindler was mortally wounded on the 21st of August 1917. During the evening of the first day we all explored the city of Ypres, where we all brought souvenirs and ate delicious Belgian pancakes, waffles and ice cream. Afterwards, we went to the In Flanders Fields museum where we were taught more about the Front Lines of the war in different countries, demonstrated land borders and how the Schlieffen TackTick would’ve worked in the lays of the land, saw military uniforms that were worn at the time and so much more.

Again after dinner at the Poppies Hostel, all of us walked out into the beautiful Ypres to go into the Leonidas Belgian Chocolate Shop where they gave us incredible chocolates and had the opportunity to buy with amazing discounts (whole bar of chocolate, box of 10 Belgian treats and 8 stroop waffles for 15 euros!). We all brought some delicious sweets. Following that, we walked to the Menin Gate to participate in the Last Post ceremony that is held every night at 8pm to pay respect to all deaths from the War but especially to remember those who are lost at war or have no grave. Two students Niamh Wynne and Lucia Lopez were chosen to lay a wreath from the whole of Presdales School in honor of the lives that were lost. Many people all gathered, whether being tourists, locals or military personnel we all were together in mourning and remembrance. It was one of the most moving experiences of my life.

On the second day we had the journey back to do and still had an amazing schedule to do. Starting the day, we drove away from Ypres and travelled to Newfoundland Park, this is the site where the Battle of the Somme happened. In the site there were many memorials, cemeteries and almost perfectly preserved trenches. We had the opportunity to walk through the Allied forces trenches and just imagine how life could be down there just 109 years ago, also seeing the German trenches (which were visibly built better due to the fact they were deeper dug). Whilst walking we also saw the “Danger Tree”, this is a tree that during the battle, soldiers would seek shelter behind in hopes the Germans would not see and shoot them. This sadly did work as when the sun came up everyone was able to be seen. We now know this because Mrs Inwood explained it to us as we walked around the site as well as other facts. Secondly, we arrived at the Thiepval Memorial dedicated to giving graves to soldiers with no recognition and bring light to all lost at war. It has a 43 meter tall memorial with thousands of names wrapping around it of soldiers with no resting place, lost forever. Our last place we visited on this trip was Vimy Ridge, a site with preserved trenches and Canada memorial in Belgium for their soldiers; it is 30 meters high and is placed there because it is the place the Canadians made the most impact for their fighting and helped out the whole of the Allied forces.

On our way back we took 9 hours, two passport controls and a lot of sleeping but made it back to school at 9:30, having done one of the best school trips of our lives. I’d like to thank all of the amazing staff that organised and chaperoned this trip, that was : Miss Workman, Miss Martin, Miss Mockett, Mrs Inwood, Mr Payne, Mr Baldwin, Mrs Yates and Mrs Dray. They were all incredible to us, helped us and taught us all more about WWI. A special thank you to Miss Workman though who organised this whole trip and put hours of effort into making it all work seamlessly. This trip was eye opening and fascinating to all of us. We all loved it.

News from PE

International Rugby players visit Presdales PE

On Tuesday, our GCSE and A Level classes were treated to an inspirational talk from Syd and Lotte who are currently a part of the staff body at Heath Mount School.

They started by giving an overview of their playing journeys and how that has led them to play for their current club Saracens, as well as competing on an International stage.

They shared their experience of the values, attitude and mindset that their club encourages, and how they seek to uphold those values both on and off the pitch.

It was humbling to hear how both players juggle their sporting commitments around their full time jobs. This dedication and resilience revolves around their love of the sport, and the motivation to be the best version of themselves.

Lotte and Syd also made many links to our examination topics by applying practical examples of their training programmes, diet and nutrition, goal setting and ensuring peak performance for matches.

A really incredible insight into the lives of two top class athletes; the highs, the lows and the constant drive to challenge themselves.

Football

Year 7

Before half term, our Year 7s experienced their first football matches in friendlies against Broxbourne. Both matches were extremely competitive and closely contested. Team 1 lost 3-1 however, the game could have gone either way. Team 2 battled out a 1-1 draw in an even contest. Well done to all the girls involved!

U12s

The U12s football team played their first competitive match in the County Cup before half term, winning 5-2 against Dame Alice Owens.

The girls played some lovely football in a strong team performance. Their energy levels, especially out of possession to recover the ball, was particularly impressive. Lots of good performances with Isabelle voted PotM by Dame Alice. Coaches PotM was Amelia M. Well done to all girls!

Netball

Year 8

Well done to the Year 8 Netball team that recently played at Simon Balle in the next round of the County Cup game. Unfortunately, they were unable to get into their flow and lost the game to a strong SB team – full of club team mates! Star Player was Scarlet for getting every ball and getting lots of interception’s! Well done to everybody!

Year 10

Our Year 10 netballers had a fantastic game against Simon Balle this week. After a slow start, the girls found their rhythm and finished strong, securing an impressive 18–6 win. OPOM was Scarlett and CPOM was Mia. Well done, girls!

Senior Team

Our senior netballers (with some last min assistance from Year 10s) also had a great game against Simon Balle on Monday. The girls worked tirelessly throughout for a convincing win 38-17. OPOM was Lilianna and CPOM was Chloe. Well done!
