Where can languages take you?

On Friday 7th November, we were fortunate to be visited by an ex-student who wanted to return to Presdales to share her experiences of language learning. Since Katie Curtis left Presdales in 2017, she has completed her undergraduate degree in Italian and Spanish from the University of Manchester and a masters’ degree in Madrid.

Katie talked about her year abroad, which she spent studying in Bergamo, northern Italy, before working as a trading assistant in Madrid. She described the highs and lows of her year, including taking the Prince of Libya’s pet chihuahua for walks and cutting off her finger on a tin of tuna all while navigating the challenge of learning the language.

“I attended Katie’s talk on Friday lunchtime, and I was absolutely inspired by her story. I actually reached out to her afterwards to tell her what an amazing job she did. I want to become a language teacher, and it’s so lovely to see other people who are as passionate as I am- it’s great to know that your dreams are achievable and there is always someone with you at every step of the way. I couldn’t have made a better decision than to continue studying languages, and Katie only confirmed that for me.” Sophie, Year 12

“I really did enjoy Katie’s talk last week because I think those of us who are interested in a similar path and spending time abroad, want to hear about life there disregarding school work and how fun the social side would actually be, as that really would be what would make it such a great experience. It was also interesting to hear about where her degree and fluency in Italian and Spanish have taken her in her career to work at Warner Bros!” Willow, Year 11

“It was very inspiring and I found it very eye opening as to what my future could look like if I continue with languages. The path Katie has taken seems like something I would love to do, especially considering the year abroad in a degree in languages as it’s not just work but social and life skills.” Ronnie, Year 11

Edible news from the Russian Department

During the first half-term of this year, the Russian department was very busy sampling traditional foods favoured by many Russians.

At the end of September, members of Years 10, 11, and 12 visited Harrow School one Saturday for a ‘Day at the Dacha’ event. Students of Russian at Harrow School delivered presentations on life at the ‘Dacha’ over the last 100 years, and our students were entertained by a balalaika-playing singer who taught them some simple folk songs and games. This drummed up quite an appetite for traditional Pirozhki (pies) of all shapes and fillings.

More recently, Year 8 had the opportunity to put some food vocabulary into practice with the ‘кафе’ (café) lesson, during which they tried dumplings (pelmeni), buckwheat (grechka), and black bread, among other savoury items. They also practised ordering Russian sweets, biscuits, and marshmallow treats from each other and reacted to the tastes in Russian!

Very impressive! Well done to the few that dared to try everything!

Global Week of Languages and Cultures 2025

October 3, 2025/in Other lang information /by Presdales School

During the week of 22nd to 26th September, we celebrated the diversity of languages and cultures within our school community with a variety of activities throughout the week. In tutor groups, we looked at how many loan words from other languages we already use on a day to day basis. We also embraced the idea that learning other people’s languages opens hearts and minds.

Presdales teachers greeted their classes in a different language every day. By lesson 6 they were quite proficient!

On Monday we hosted an event for students during Monday lunchtime called ‘Culinary Connections’. Students from Years 7 to 9 were invited to bring in a home-prepared dish/snack originating from a different country. Over 60 families baked and prepared a variety of dishes. There was a real buzz of activity. Thank you very much to those families who contributed to this very popular event. The aims of the event were to showcase and share food from other countries and cultures and to allow students to try something that they might not usually eat!

In class, in Year 7, we celebrated with researching flags, languages and ‘hello’s’ from all over the world. and creating bunting with the information gathered. Students in Years 8 and 9 in both of their languages were given a theme or topic to focus on and have produced some excellent bookmark creations, which you can view here.

German

In German Year 8 information about German companies and Year 9 researched different musicians and music genres which are popular in Germany.

Spanish

This year for Global Week of Languages and Culture, the Spanish Department celebrated in KS3 lessons by students researching various aspects of hispanophone (Spanish-speaking) culture and decorating bookmarks with their research. Year 8 enjoyed researching traditional food from Spanish-speaking countries such as paella valenciana, crema catalana, patatas bravas, churros, and croquetas. Year 9 considered the different amazing places that Spanish could take them, and found out about tourist attractions such as Machu Picchu, La Sagrada Familia, La Isla de Pascua, and La Alhambra. Year 7 celebrated the diversity of languages and countries around the world, researching different countries and making decorations with each country’s flag, the languages spoken there, and how to say hello in those languages.

Italian

Year 8 bookmarks had a Made in Italy theme and students researched Italian brands such Prada, Nutella and Lamborghini.

Year 9 Italianists found out more about Italian music and researched artists from Jovanotti (Signora Jennings’ favourite rapper) to global superstar, Andrea Bocelli and this year’s Italian Eurovision entrant Lucio Corsi.

Russian

In Russian Year 8 students researched countries where Russian is spoken or the Cyrillic script is used and Year 9 looked into different Russian cities and their points of interest to fit into the holidays topic that they are currently studying.

German Partnership Exchange – Return visit 1st to 5th June 2025

Earlier this term we were able to welcome 20 students to Presdales for the second time, from our German Partnership school ‘Gymnasium am Neandertal’ (Gymneander for short!). They were with us for 5 days experiencing life in an English school with a full programme of events both in and out of school. The visit began with a joint visit to London, when we showed our visitors the major attractions, picnicked in Green Park and spent some time in Covent Garden. They also experienced a normal school day with lessons at Presdales, a visit to Scott’s Grotto, and a Town trail in Ware. Our parents generously donated items for the traditional cream tea, including large numbers of scones, clotted cream and jam as well as home baked Victoria sponge cake. A highlight this year was when our German partners visited their partners in their homes for tea on one evening. We said our final Good Bye this year at a Pizza and pool party in our own pool. The weather was kind and we had lots of fun.

It was lovely to see our students taking good care of their partners, who they had already visited in Germany, and friendships developing with our students across the school. Thank you to parents and carers who have supported this partnership, which we hope will continue to develop and grow. The photos and the comments below from parents and students convey the real exchange of ideas and experiences.

‘We just wanted to send you a quick note to thank you for the wonderful exchange programme. It was a fantastic opportunity and our daughter has gained a lot from both the trip to Germany and the reciprocal visit here. The opportunity to connect with her partner beforehand was very beneficial.’

‘It was a delight to meet ……….who graciously answered all of our questions from ‘what was covid lockdown like for you in Germany’ to ‘has it hit the news in Germany that Peppa Pig has a new baby sister’?

‘I just want to say how nice and polite the boys are. They have just gone over to the park to play football with my little boy, who is 10 and is football mad like the boys.’

‘I tried to speak some German to my partner and learnt a few new words like Marienkäfer which means ladybird. The trip to Germany helped with my independance and confidence as I was in a new environment and had to use my German vocabulary skills.’

‘I really enjoyed every part of the trip, it was the best school trip I’ve ever been on, my favourite part about the trip was just having the partners as we became really good friends and we have kept contact with each other and are planning on visiting each other, I really liked the homestay as it showed us how they spent some of their time outside of school like going to the park or going to get ice cream, I also really loved going to the rowing club as it was one of the best things as we got to eat some German food with our partners and we got to try rowing at their local rowing club, another thing I really liked was Phantasialand as we got to spend most of the day there with just our friends and go on all the rides, eat lunch and just generally have the best time.’

‘We tried to practice German with our partners while they were in England and at the homestay we were teaching them English tongue twisters and they were teaching us German ones.’

‘I spoke some German and only heard the partners speaking it to each other. I liked how it helped the German partners learn more about England and what British people are like.’

‘I would definitely recommend the exchange to other students as you have a lot more independence on this one than you do in other trips. It was also very eye opening to speak to my partner and learn more about German culture and what it would be like to live there. It was definitely worth the money and I really enjoyed it and made memories that will last forever. One piece of advice I would give to someone would be to not worry about the language barrier as they do speak a lot of English and will not judge you if you test out your German on them.’

‘I liked going to my partners house as it was cool to learn more about her and what she likes to do for fun.’

Modern Foreign Languages Spelling Bee 2025

May 23, 2025/in Other lang information /by Presdales School

On Monday 28th April, three of our courageous Year 7 students, Yu-Ting Chen, Annabelle Mutch and Emma Swindle, attended the Regional Final of the Spelling Bee for German in Cambridge.

The competition involved learning the meanings and spellings of 250 German words and then saying as many of them and spelling them using the German alphabet within a minute, in front of an audience in a lecture theatre. All three students were in the competition as the best 37 of an entry of 3306 entrants.

Emma has one a place in the National final taking place on Friday 27th at Magdeline College, University of Cambridge and means she will have to learn another 100 words, 350 in total.

We are proud of them all and wish Emma the very best in the final round. Watch this space!

Russian Trip to Tallinn

The week before half term 15 Year 8 and 9 students visited the capital of Estonia, Tallinn where approximately 40% of the population are native Russians and there are lots of Russian speakers.

Students enjoyed a whirlwind tour of what life was like in Estonia during the Soviet Union, discovered what the KGB might be interested in them for and where they would have ended up if they didn’t go along with party communist party lines. They also took a step back into Imperial Russia and visited Peter the Great’s house and palace, enjoying the art collection there.

Students particularly enjoyed the Russian lessons and visit to the school where they met young Russian speakers and exchanged ideas about their lives and hobbies. Tallinn has a beautiful Russian language theatre which offered the students the opportunity to enjoy a very novel staging of Figaro, which was visually very engaging even if they spoke very quickly.

The students thought the old town of Tallinn was very beautiful and made their own Russian dumplings at the Russian restaurant in the old town centre. They also ordered their own Russian pies in the pie shop. We were very lucky to enjoy Tallinn in the snow and the students represented Presdales very well in spite of extreme tiredness from such a packed programme.

Year 7 Russian

Slightly belatedly for the Russians, the Year 7 Russian class marked Maslenitsa (pancake week) with pancake ordering, sushki bracelet making and singing. The students embraced the challenge of singing quite fast and made a rather pleasant sound by the end of it! Well done Year 7.

Online workshop with the University of Bristol

On Tuesday 21st January Year 12 students of Italian were given an insight into one of the hottest Italian TV series of the moment during an interactive workshop with the University of Bristol. Professor Catherine O’Rawe, who has recently been writing a book about Italian youth television, told us all about Mare Fuori, a gritty teen drama set in a fictional juvenile prison in Naples.

During the session we considered different representations of the city, looking at the inviting clichés portrayed in two Dolce & Gabbana adverts and contrasting them with the dark and dangerous criminal underworld seen in the Mare Fuori trailer. Then Professor O’Rawe told us about Neapolitan melodrama and we saw examples of this while analysing the emotion and physicality in a very raw scene from the series. We then discussed music from the series and analysed the lyrics of a song. Professor O’Rawe was very impressed with the engagement of our students and the session provided a taste of what it’s like to study Italian at undergraduate level. In fact, Nyah and Polly, two of our former students, are currently in their third year studying Italian in Professor O’Rawe’s department! Mrs Evenden

What did the students say?

I enjoyed it because it was a nice wider application of our understanding. It helped consolidate and introduce knowledge on Italian culture. I also enjoyed having discussions with our class and listening to the professor’s insight. Sai

I enjoyed learning about Italian culture and the media industry. I was surprised that Naples is so heavily romanticised and the dangers of the place that is hidden from the public. Sophia

It was very interesting to learn about different media in Italy and I loved learning more about Naples. Lara

I found the themes very interesting. I liked how the adverts and the trailer presented Naples in very different lights. I was surprised by the fact that some of the actors in the show were not professional. Elizabeth

I was already aware that different cities in Italy had different dialects. However, hearing the Neapolitan dialect was shocking! Madelina I thought it was interesting to compare the representation of Naples in adverts compared to in Mare Fuori. I enjoyed analysing the lyrics and thinking about the use of different tenses. Russian department letter and song exchange with the Aubakirova school, Almaty

After a lovely visit to the Aubakirova School In Almaty, Kazakhstan in October, Year 7 Russian shared a New Year  Song with an English class there and received a performance of a Christmas song from them. Mrs Willett was very proud of our Year 7s for reading the printed cyrillic script so confidently for this point in the course.

If you would like to hear their performance please ask them because it is in their google classroom.

The Kazakh students shared a song accompanied by one student playing the flute.

The Year 10 Russian group (and a couple of extras) sent Christmas cards written in Russian to a similar aged class and were happy to receive New Year cards in return.
