DofE Gold & Silver Expeditions – An Unforgettable Adventure

As the school year was ending, over 100 of our Year 10, 11, and 12 students stepped up to tackle the ultimate challenge of their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award: the Silver and Gold expeditions. Operating at a grand scale, these consecutive ventures served as a true test of endurance, teamwork, and sheer determination. From navigating demanding terrain to managing their own camp life, our students more than rose to the occasion, demonstrating outstanding resilience and camaraderie every step of the way.

Gold Expedition – Breacon Beacons Challenge

Triumph in the Brecon Beacons: The Gold DofE Expedition

This year’s Gold Duke of Edinburgh expedition was a major milestone, serving as a vital practice run for our Year 11s and the official qualifying venture for our Year 12 students. Over five demanding yet deeply rewarding days, a total of 59 eager students took on the beautiful, rugged terrain of the Brecon Beacons, with an impressive 55 successfully completing the entire journey

Battling the Elements

The expedition was as much a test of adaptability as it was of endurance, pushing students through hiking on some tough terrain. Scorching hot conditions demanded a quick change of plans. To keep everyone safe, instructors adjusted routes, assisted with carrying equipment, and implemented a strict schedule that required everyone to rise at dawn and set off by 6am.

By wrapping up their daily mileage by early afternoon, the groups successfully avoided the blistering hottest part of the day. Despite the inevitable blisters, aching limbs, and early alarms, team spirit remained remarkably high throughout the challenge.

Campfire Camaraderie

Evenings at the campsite provided a perfect blend of preparation and well-earned relaxation. After pitching their tents, groups huddled together to carefully plot the next day’s routes. Once the serious work was done, the camp came alive with community spirit. A major highlight of the trip was the legendary “not a pub” quiz hosted by the lead instructor, which brought much-needed laughter and connection to the weary hikers.

The Verdict: From start to finish, our Gold groups showed tremendous grit, good humour, and mutual support – all qualities that lie at the very heart of the DofE Award. Huge congratulations to everyone involved on this incredible achievement!

Silver Expedition – Chiltern Hills

Meanwhile, our 75 Silver participants successfully conquered their three-day qualifying expedition in the Chiltern Hills this week. It was a flawless performance, with every single student completing the trek. Over the course of the expedition, the groups navigated open countryside, covering vast distances on foot each day.

More Than Just a Hike

Despite the physical demands of the trail, the evenings remained electric. The atmosphere was filled with laughter and energy, anchored once again by the now-legendary “not a pub” quiz, which offered some much-needed downtime after the day’s exertions.

As the sun dipped below the horizon on the final evening, casting a golden glow over the Chiltern landscape, it was clear that this trip represented something truly special. It was about more than just checking a box; it was a powerful, shared experience defined by resilience, enduring friendship, and genuine joy.

A True Reflection of Presdales Spirit

Across both the Silver and Gold expeditions, our students were nothing short of exceptional. Facing extreme terrain, unpredictable weather, and sheer physical exhaustion, they constantly lifted each other up, maintained their positivity, and displayed outstanding teamwork.

These journeys were far more than a simple test of endurance; they were a true testament to our students’ character. Whether navigating the challenges of the Brecon Beacons or trekking through the rolling Chilterns, every single participant demonstrated the very best of what it means to be part of the Presdales DofE community.

We are incredibly proud of every student who took part. They showed grit, warmth, and relentless resilience – well done to you all!

Cricket

Well done to the U13 Cricket team who played in the Chance to Shine Cricket tournament at St Margaretsbury CC. They performed so well, improving their batting and tactical knowledge of the game throughout. They were unlucky to loose one of their games by only 1 run! Well done all of you!

Athletics

A huge well done to our U14 Athletics Squad who recently travelled to Jarman Park, Hemel to compete in the County League Plate Finals!

There were some fantastic performances across the team, with special mentions to Millie, who claimed 1st place in the 1500m, setting a fantastic new PB in the process, and Lily, who delivered a brilliant gold medal winning performance in the 800m.

The whole squad should be incredibly proud of their efforts, finishing 8th on the day and an impressive 16th overall in the county out of 48 schools that entered the competition.

Nicky Morris 2026

Nicky Morris as we know it has changed; previously the age groups were Year 7, Year 8/9, Year 10+. This year, unfortunately, the older year groups have gone! It was Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9/10 combined. Massive thank you to all of our senior athletes that had kept the date free before the change of age groups. We were gutted not to be able to see you in action and attempting to break your previous records!

The girls performed amazing. The following received gold medals in their events…

Year 7 – Discus – Sophie C 🥇 Long jump – Sylvie T 🥇 Year 8 – 800m – Lily F 🥇 1500m – Millie A🥇 Year 9/10 – 300m – Skye M 🥇 Shot – Jess B 🥇 Long jump and 300m – Lottie S 🥇 4 x 300m relay – Lottie, Sophia, Amelie & Skye 🥇

OVERALL RESULTS

Year 7 team – 3rd🥉 Year 8 team – 3rd 🥉 Year 9/10 – joint 1st with Avanti🥇 Overall – 2nd🥈

Well done all of you, we are incredibly proud of your effort and determination throughout the day, your team work in the relays and supporting each other.

Rounders

Year 8 District Rounders WINNERS!!!

An outstanding team performance playing six consecutive matches, winning them all to be crowned District Champions! Huge well done to you all. Brilliant bowling and fielding to stop the opposition scoring! Lily F won every toss and chose to field first which set us up knowing what score we needed. The girls never crumbled under the pressure and batted competently avoiding the fielders! They took risks in the right places putting pressure on their opponents. So proud of you all! More importantly, with a team of 10, each game a different student volunteered to be off! I can’t pick a player of the tournament as you were all amazing!!

Summer Visit to the Riverside Care Home

Our third and final visit this year to the Riverside Care Home took place on Thursday 2nd July – and it ended the year perfectly!

Our Year 12 students decided on the theme of Wimbledon for the summer term visit.  It included tennis themed crosswords for the residents, as well as a tennis quiz which included questions from the 1960s and 1970s. The students had some lovely conversations with the residents about their experiences of tennis and sporting events, and spoke about the excitement surrounding the England match the evening before.

Some residents had their nails painted whilst Bea in Year 12 sang to them – this was very popular with the residents and staff who came from other areas of the care home to listen.

The afternoon was finished off with strawberries and cream and a discussion about who might Wimbledon this year!

This is our third year of visiting the Riverside Care Home and we look forward to organising our next visit in the Autumn Term.

Year 12 Learn4Living Day

On Monday 6th July, Year 12 had their final L4L Day for this academic year. The programme followed several areas of the government’s RSHE and PSHE programme which included:

  • Herts Young Homeless – Budgeting & Finance (Post 18)
  • Herts Young Homeless – Coercive Behaviours
  • Herts Young Homeless – Consent
  • Cocoon – drugs & alcohol (formerly Drugslink)
  • Mindfulness Session with Ms Peters (Head of Year 12)
  • InvestIn – to talk about Apprenticeships & how Work Experience can boost your applications

The students took part in the sessions, asking questions and engaging with the speakers about the various areas that teenagers their age face.

We are grateful to the local services for offering these sessions for our young people.

STEM Challenge

July 16, 2026/in STEM /by Presdales School

On the 25th June, we took thirteen Year 8 and 9 students to the University of Hertfordshire to take part in a STEM Challenge against other schools across the county. Two students from each school were part of a multischool team and competed in 3 of 4 available tasks that covered Forensics, Medicine, Robotics and Engineering.

Alice Gil-Dignam and Bex Drury were part of the team that were overall winners and will be competing in the Finals next year. Millie Fowler and Lola Eyre were part of one of the teams that performed the best in an individual task. All the students were amazing, learning new skills, working well in teams with students they had never met before and showing enthusiasm and perseverance in their tasks. Well done to all who took part and good luck to our finalists next year.

“I really enjoyed my time learning new skills that will be helpful for the future. It was nice to connect with people that I have never met before. I particularly enjoyed making the cars as it was interesting to overcome struggles with my team to make it work. Thank you for the experience.” Isla Bowkett

“I originally went in thinking it was a just a learning day, but it ended up being that and a competition. We were put into teams, one person you knew and two you didn’t, you had to work in those teams for the whole day. I liked the instructors as they never gave us the answer, only hints to steer us in the right direction, which made us all come to our own unique conclusions, creating many inventions and ideas. We programmed a robot, learned how to do CPR and the readings for the vital signs. At the end was the presentation, everyone shuffling around in anticipation. My team came runner up for two things; however, we did win the whole UH Science Challenge day!! Our team was presented with trophies, and we were just as surprised as each other. We had worked well together considering we were strangers, whilst having a fun time. I would do it again, as it was very fun and I learned some vital skills in CPR, logical, creative skills in robotics and compromise in programming.” Alice Gill-Dignam
