German Year 9 Spelling Bee Competition 2024

June 20, 2024/in Other lang information /by Presdales School

Special congratulations to Caitlyn Grayson who participated in this year’s Regional Competiton of the German Translation Bee in Peterborough on 5th June 2024. She was amongst the last 77 from 5020 entrants at the beginning of the competition. Well done!

Congratulation to Erin Bellamy, Lily McMenanim, Anna Stichbury, Georgia Whittey, Lizzie Morgans and Sienna Perry who practised hard and took part in the School competition as far as round 3.

Well done to all of our Year 9 German students, who have taken part in the Translation Bee competition this year. The competition is in 4 stages and began back in October 2023. Students had to translate as many sentences as possible in one minute, using a variety of structures and tenses. This was not easy and they showed real resilience and self- reliance to continue learning and practising in their own time.

Stage 1: Class Competition: present tense sentences

Stage 2: School Competition: present, past tense sentences

Stage 3: Eastern Regional Competition: present, past and future sentences

Stage 4: National Competition: present, past, future tenses plus modal auxilliaries

Tesla at Presdales

May 9, 2024/in STEM /by Presdales School

Tesla, it’s more than just a car. Tesla is the future of zero emission energy. We were lucky enough to have a presentation from two people who work at Tesla in our science lesson on Thursday 25th April. They spoke to us about the future of Tesla and how their plan is to go from cars to energy suppliers. The things that were spoken about closely relate to those in which we are already learning in our GCSE science lessons. Energy stores and the enhanced greenhouse effect were amongst the mentioned subjects. We found out that power packs can be used to conserve energy that is not used during the day so it can be used in times of need such as power cuts or in South Africa during load shedding. We were also told that there is enough wind power to supply the whole of England. We had the incredible chance to see a high-end Tesla car up close and personal. We found out that the cars are all made onsite in mega factories to reduce the carbon emission on each and every car. It was compared to making a toy car. The batteries in each car can also regenerative braking where the car can regain some charge when using the brakes. It was incredible to see how a car can make so much difference and impact on the environment.

VolkerHighways and VolkerFitzpatrick Open Doors Event

March 26, 2024/in Careers, Events, General News, Open Doors Event, STEM /by Presdales School

On Monday 18th March, 12 Year 10 students visited Volker head office to explore career opportunities available within the construction industry.

The VolkerVessels trip was an absolutely fascinating session – it was an incredibly eye-opening, door-opening afternoon. The trip started with a short PowerPoint presentation explaining VolkerVessels and who they are as a company, before breaking down many different careers in and paths into construction. We were presented with everything from hands-on jobs like electricians, to more office-based jobs like bid writers and planners. Everyone working there and helping us out was genuinely so lovely and so charismatic, and so willing to answer questions.

Following that, we moved around various different activities based off certain careers! They had all kinds of careers: procurement, HR, the digital work, hands-on electrical work, and more. We got to take 3D scans of our environment on programs, try our hand at wiring a lamp-post, spot risks in real-life situations, and so much more! It really did open my eyes to a whole new field with a world of opportunities, and it truly was jam-packed with knowledge and inspiration. Thank you to VolkerVessels, and to the Presdales Science Department!!!

Signing off, Beatrice Davis 🙂
