Using the impressive new Bluetooth Data Logging equipment grant-funded by EdufundUK Ltd our Physics Technician has been exploring a new, fun and relatable practical to demonstrate the absorption/reflection of heat. This will be introduced to the classroom in due course. Using a Pepsi can (black) and a Diet Coke can (shiny silver) the digitally graph produced in the students’ EasySense2 software will perfectly record how the two colours affect the temperature of the identical content (water). With subtle changes in temperature this could not be recorded with a normal thermometer but in digital form is very clear to the students. Thank you once again to EdufundUK Ltd for your invaluable support.

As part of their GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition course, our fantastic Year 11 students successfully recently completed their 3 hour practical exam. There was a lovely atmosphere in the department and students really wowed our staff and visitors. This year, the Food Preparation Task themes are based on Lactose intolerant or gluten free diets, dishes suitable for an obese adult on a calorie-calorie diet and Healthy and Nutritious dishes suitable for serving in a school that is launching a new international lunchtime menu. Year 11 have produced a wide range of interesting dishes to fit their chosen task. Staff and visitors lucky enough to taste the food all made extremely positive comments about the food including; “amazing aromas,” “delicious flavours” and “fantastic presentation”.
Last week, Year 12 Geography students visited one of the fastest eroding coastlines in Europe: the Holderness Coast. Students saw a variety of coastal management protecting the coast in Hornsea and, in contrast, evidence of people’s homes fallen into the sea where no coastal management was in place at Skipsea. A day trip to Scarborough challenged the students’ perception of the town and questioned whether the regeneration has been successful or not. Students prepared for their NEA coursework by practicing a range of data collection techniques, including beach sediment size and emotional mapping, whilst learning how to present this data using GIS.
Here are some photos and comments from students about their experience.
I really enjoyed learning about new data techniques on my Cranedale trip; they not only helped me learn useful techniques which I can now use in my NEA but it also allowed me to discover more about the place itself. One technique which was really useful to learn, was emotional mapping, which really helps to understand what Scarborough was like on a social level. Alice Lynn
I found the introduction of new data collection and presentation methods very helpful for the NEA as some are abstract and different in comparison to others I knew about already. The beach trip to Holderness was very informative and interesting and combined the enjoyable aspects of both physical and human geography. Lily D’Souza
