Well done to all who entered the languages house greetings card competition. It was really hard to judge because the quality of work was so high, and we really appreciated all your effort. All entrants received an R2 for house competition and winners will receive a further house point and should come to language office 2 to collect their prizes.

At Presdales we want to celebrate all the cultures and nationalities within our school community. With this in mind at the start of December we held an International Breakfast. 16 students from across different year groups met for Breakfast and found out some interests they have in common, as well as what languages they all speak. We hope that this will grow into something that will make all our students more aware of the international side of Presdales. Last week Year 11 Russian took part in the International Spelling Bee with our partner school in Yakutsk (https://arctic-school.com/en/home/). Mrs Willett was proud of all of Year 11 for being willing to try something new. Congratulations in particular to Venus Sahan and Daisy Reid for making it to the second round and very well done to Esme Sabin as the overall winner. Our students were surprised to find out that whilst we were in lesson 1, the students in Siberia had finished school and also that it was -40 there! We heard a performance of the traditional local instrument called a khomus and found out a bit about each other’s hobbies.
The Year 7 Russian class and our partner secondary school in Russia have created a collaborative work with students from both schools reciting the poem ‘Us two’ by A.A Milne in English and Russian. Friendship is very important in times like this, so the teachers thought this was the perfect poem. The languages department are so proud of the year 7s who have learnt to read so confidently from the Cyrillic script this year.
In their last lesson of the year 7MRU enjoyed ordering themselves pancakes with a variety of fillings in their make-believe cafe in room 18. They also filmed some excellent Oscar worthy dialogues in a cafe whilst they were waiting to be served.
Year 7 created some poems based around colours in French. They also had to use their dictionary and online dictionary skills to look up new words. In addition, they had to make sure they understood the correct genders so they could use the correct determiners in French. All in all there was a lot to think about! Well done 7SH for producing some creative and colourful poems.
To celebrate the Epiphany, our Year 7 groups found out about the tradition of “la galette des rois” during their French lessons. As many of our students now know, “La galette des rois” is enjoyed by French people around 6th January, the day of the Epiphany and a “fève” (a sort of charm/coin) is hidden in it. Whoever gets the slice with the “fève” is crowned King or Queen for the day. The recipe was shared and many Year 7 students created crowns and made the galette at home.
Year 7 have certainly kept us very busy with giving out Stars, R1s and R2s!
