Speech Day 2023!

January 19, 2024/in Uncategorized /by Presdales School

On Monday 18th December, we were delighted to invite our amazing ex year 11 and 13 students to celebrate their fantastic achievements and superb exam results. It was lovely to see family, friends and teachers come together to celebrate all the hard work of our students.

The ceremony was largely influenced by the senior sixth form team: Adesola, Gracie and George led the event and the senior student team started the celebrations with a summary of Presdales life in the last year. An abundance of trips, certificates, and some fabulous achievements across all subjects, where the students and staff have had a great year.

Then, we were graced with some gorgeous musical items by Presdales’ finest. Georgiana Fowler, in year 11, played a beautiful rendition of Chanson de Matin. Whilst Callum Tredgett, in year 13, rocked the hall with his guitar.

We were lucky to have an inspiring guest speaker, Sala Abdalla, a surgeon who is one of the most qualified in her field. An inspirational speech followed, where Sala explained that life had not always been easy. Born in Sudan, her family had to flee when she was only ten years old. Settling in England as a refugee, Sala knew difficulties lay ahead; a language barrier, her heritage, and not fitting the stereotype of a ‘typical’ doctor. However, Sala persevered, worked hard, and explained how you should aspire to be anything you want, whatever your background, skin colour, economic status, or any other perceived barriers in your life. Sala’s early upbringing has made her sensitive to the needs of underserved people and she had returned only days before from West Africa for another charity surgical mission where she had been delivering free surgeries to patients in deprived communities. The students were visibly moved by Sala’s speech, and we are very grateful to have had such an inspirational role model speak to our students.

Speech day was drawn to a close by our ex head girl and deputy head student. Hannah Stapleton and Charlie Waring explained how it was lovely to return to Presdales, but it was also exciting to start a new chapter and to play ‘the main characters in their own lives’. We are so proud of our students, and all they have achieved. We hope they all feel accomplished with their successes and that they have left school ready to be a main character.

This Monday marked Martin Luther King Day in the US. Although he focused his work in America, he is probably the most famous civil rights and anti racist campaigner in history. I think most of us can recite, at least part, of his famous ‘I have dream speech’, given in 1963 to an audience if more than 250 thousand people in Washington.

But what about his lesser known speeches/ letters. His daughter, Bernice King, this week said that ” he was resolute about eradicating racism, poverty and militarism. And about corrective justice work. Don’t just quote him. Encourage and enact policies that reflect his teachings”

Here are some links to more of his wider work that she encourages us all to read/ listen to in order to understand him and his aims more.

Football

U14s

Dominant performance from our U14s who reached the quarter finals of the County Cup football with a 7-0 win against John Henry Newman.

Presdales played some lovely football throughout, constantly pressing JHN into making mistakes and stealing the ball high up the pitch. It was an impressive team performance with everyone playing their part. Joint Coaches PoTM are Marlee Seymour and Amy Little. Well done to all the girls!

U16s

Well done to the U16s football team who beat Parmiters 7-1 in the County Cup. The match was fortunate to go ahead considering the sub zero temperatures but luckily Parmiters have a 4G pitch which withstood the weather better than grass.

Presdales were 3-1 up at half time and completely dominated the second half scoring 4 times without reply. Excellent team performance all over the pitch. Goals from Tonye x 4, Donya x 2 and Maia x 1.

Joint Coaches PoTM were Bella H with a strong display at centre half and Tonye with 4 goals. I’m afraid the extremely cold weather meant getting a team photo was challenging! Well done to all the girls!

Netball

Year 7

Well done to our Year 7 netball teams who played against John Warner on Monday. The match was very close throughout but in the end Presdales won by 1 goal! POTM was Hermione Curzon! Great efforts from all of you!

Year 9

Well done to the Year 9 netball team who played against Broxbourne last week in some very cold conditions! Presdales won 24-5 and the POTM was Alice Redhead. Great work girls!

Year 10

Well done to the Year 10s who also played netball against Broxbourne last week! The A team won 29-10 and the POTM was Ava Lancaster and the B team lost 22-13 and the POTM was Evelyn Pearce!
