A massive thank you to everyone who donated, money or time, to Fanconi Hope, last year’s school charity. Throughout the year, we managed to raise £9,922.75 – a huge amount for a charity that typically raises about £30,000 in the same time frame. Fanconi Hope will use the money to provide support and care for children and families dealing with Fanconi anaemia and to fund research into finding better treatment and, ultimately, a cure for this disease. We were overwhelmed by all the support shown to us as we supported the charity in memory of Sabrina Foufa, who we lost last year when her Fanconi anaemia progressed into leukaemia. This year the school voted to help support the Sudan. This year’s school charity is World Vision, the British Equivalent of the Sudan Relief Fund. This non-profit organisation was set up in 1950, and helps to bring food, water and shelter to those desperately in need in South Sudan. Their mission is to bring peace and stability to this nation which has for so long been affected by war. After continuous civil war, it was finally agreed in 2011 that South Sudan is an independent state from the North. However, due to constant tension in the states, political fighting erupted into war in 2013, with tens of thousands now living in UN bases. The situation today remains highly unstable and insecure. The number of refugees sheltering in neighbouring countries has passed 2 million, creating one of the world’s worst humanitarian disasters. Even inside South Sudan, more than 2 million people are displaced and 4.8 million people are facing a food crisis. In 2015, the World Health Organization called the crisis in South Sudan one of the worst health emergencies in the world, and in 2017 the UN declared famine. As a school, we would love to make a difference in South Sudan and, with our support, the charity can help bring long term solutions to those who desperately need it.School Charity 2019-2020
