Insights into Occupational Therapy: A Guest Speaker Visit
Yesterday, our Year 10 Health & Social Care students enjoyed an inspiring session with Ali Parkes, a Specialist Occupational Therapist (OT).
Ali provided a deep dive into the profession, explaining that the primary goal of an OT is to help individuals of all ages navigate challenges brought on by illness, injury, or ageing. Unlike many clinical roles, OTs focus on the whole person rather than just a medical label. They achieve this by:
- Adapting environments to suit a patient’s needs.
- Modifying tasks to make daily activities achievable.
- Promoting independence so individuals can lead fulfilling lives.
One of the most eye-opening parts of the talk was the sheer variety of settings where OTs work. You can find them in:
- NHS Hospitals
- Schools
- Prisons
- Rehabilitation Centres
Once qualified, the career path offers several “niche” avenues for specialisation, including Paediatrics, Neurology, and Hand Therapy.
For students interested in becoming an Occupational Therapist, Ali detailed the different entry requirements, highlighting both the traditional university route and the apprenticeship pathway. She also emphasised the essential soft skills – such as empathy and creative problem-solving – that are vital for success in this rewarding field.
