Take Your Daughter to Work Day 2024
I had an awesome time at Google for “Bring Your Daughter to Work Day”! The scavenger hunt was so much fun, and I enjoyed getting a peek into the work environment with some business meetings. Learning about cloud computing and AI was mind-blowing, and the AI penalty shootout was a blast! Even though a few meetings dragged on, the delicious food made up for it. Plus, I scored some cool Google goodies to take home. Overall, it was a super memorable day!

I attended at GSK with my mum. I arrived on site at 8:30 to get a visitor’s badge from the people at the front gate. My mum showed me around the buildings and when we got to the office area we found a computer setup to work at. We then went into a sofa area so that my mum could show me the safety briefings and not bother anyone by talking. We went into the break room, got some hot chocolate/coffee and ate the biscuits I had brought to share with my mum’s team. After that my mum showed me a presentation just so I knew a bit about what was going on. I learned about molecule to marketplace and analytical development. A lunchtime welfare walk had been organised so me, my mum and three family friends who also work there went before lunch. When we got back we made a quick stop at the canteen and ate the food we had already brought. The rest of the afternoon was filled with meetings. In between we went to visit the stability chambers that were in a different building then continued with meetings. Once all that was done my mum opened some emails and I continued to do a puzzle they had started. Then to finish off I took a picture in front of the GSK sign and at around 5:40 I was heading home.

Today I had the pleasure of taking Valentina to work with me. I own a Pizzeria (Petrucci’s Artisan Stonebaked Pizza) based in Bishops Stortford.
We had a great day and Valentina learnt a lot. She learnt how to use the till system and take card payments also to carry out other prep such as making up pizza boxes. Valentina helped me make the pizza dough from scratch and she weighed out all of the ingredients and tipped them into our large dough mixer ready for mixing. Valentina also learnt how to use the balling up machine which we use to turn the dough portions in to balls ready for proving. Valentina also learnt how to hand stretch the dough into pizza bases. (Valentina made the pizza in the attached photo)
She was a bit nervous to begin with but her confidence grew by the end of the day and she now wants to come and help more often. Valentina has even offered to come and help me on our pizza truck at the weekend.

I went to 2 different places of work for experience, I went to my Mum’s work which was Tesco headquarters and I went to my Dad’s work which is a law firm called Sherrards.
Dad’s Work – For this, I went during the half term and I went to sit with the marketing team. I first went round and met everyone and they introduced me to what they do and what that involves. I then moved on to doing some research on some of these things that were talked about. I did some Instagram posts and edited some videos as well as shadowing Abi who is in charge of promoting the brand organization of events and data.
Mum’s Work – For this, I went to the Tesco headquarters and I went around the campus, I was introduced to some people and was told about the different areas of the campus that were different things such as F&F and food. I also sat in on a meeting that was talking about redundancies and managing problems.
Both were really good fun, I especially loved going to my dad’s work as I found that especially interesting and I could see myself doing something similar to that in the future.

Yesterday, I helped my Auntie work for Oxford University Press and listened to a meeting at a school and how they support the school and market the books. Then we drove back to her house and carried on with some work. We replied to emails, and I helped her to finish her spreadsheet and write down some notes for her to use at her meeting on Sunday. I quite enjoyed it but the drives there and back were a bit boring.

I went to my dad’s physiotherapy business in London and met four of his patients. I introduced myself and also listened to some of the exercises he was giving them and sat in the gym. I couldn’t see patients because they were new or because of health and safety.

Today I participated in ‘Take Your Daughter to Work Day’ and I went to my Mum and Dad’s work. They both work in the Civil Service in Whitehall; my Mum works in HM Revenue and Customs and my Dad works for the Office for National Statistics. I really enjoyed looking around both of their offices and finding more about their jobs. It was really exciting and interesting to be let into a building the public aren’t allowed in and I got to see the Champions League Cup in the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. I was also allowed into the turrets which give you a really good view of Big Ben and Westminster!
There is a part of my Mum’s building called the Drum and if you stand in the middle and stamp it reverberates and makes a strange sound! It is also where the Fast and the Furious and James Bond were filmed. I met a couple of my Mum’s senior colleagues which was really insightful as they told me about their jobs and got to ask them a few questions (for example how they got into the civil service and what they wanted to be then when they were younger). It was really nice to get an insight into a work environment and I really enjoyed the day!

Today we had ‘Take Your Daughter To Work Day’ and first we took the train to London Liverpool Street then walked to my mum’s office. I sat and listened to lots of her meetings, some on call, some in person with film producers, then went out into London for lunch, and had some more calls and I understood what she did and who the calls were with etc etc.

Hello, I had a really good day today and enjoyed learning about what my parents do. I got to watch and learn from many people about the different jobs that people do at a law firm.

My day was very good and fun as I was learning about how to decorate and make things level using plaster, I used plaster to make a wall even at my uncle’s job and I helped sand down any uneven walls and window sills. I had a whole day of work starting at 9am and finishing at 3:55. I managed to help get the job done quicker and was able to help around a lot by carrying things inside and out.

Today I went to Pure Evil studios for a work experience. I learnt how to use images and put them together to make a piece for a print. You can use photoshop to changes the colours, sizes and styles you need for the print. Next, I learnt how to place customers’ orders and make sure they get sent out correctly.
After this we went to the studios to start making a 1/1 print. I had to design in pen on the background of the print.
This was what I learned in my day, I really enjoyed it.

Today at Copues Construction I started the day visiting the different construction sites with my Mum. Whilst at the properties I met the team and asked them lots of questions about what their role is within the company. Over the Easter Holiday my mum took me to visit these sites to be able to see the difference, so when I went today I saw how much work had progressed. After the visits we had lunch and then headed back to the office where I was shown how to answer the phone. I asked to look at a blank plan from one of the properties we had visited and shown how you would start to think about a kitchen layout.

Today at my Dad’s work I came to his office in East London and spent a very full day of meetings with him. I sat with him for all of his meetings and listened to what all his staff were doing today across each of his national operations. I learnt how to organise emails and schedule meetings which was cool to know how to do it professionally. I also learnt how to talk professionally and in a way that everyone will know what I’m saying and in a way that is inclusive for everyone and that everyone can understand. I also learnt some of the struggles that staff and managers can face day to day and how they resolve it. I had a great day with my Dad learning what work is really like.

My work experience with the ED&I team was eye opening and inspiring and I learned about the importance of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in the Media and Marketing industry. We worked and spoke about projects aimed at improving and promoting diversity and celebrating different cultures and beliefs, within the company. Fortunately, I was able to participate in team training and discussions that allowed me to understand leadership and how to make a difference. The team was very passionate and dedicated and I felt comfortable and included every step of the way. This experience has taught me the importance of prioritising plans and also taught me to think about how I am going to make a difference and to focus on my talents and plans to be successful in my career.

We arrived at 10:00.
We started the day by doing some exercises with my mum’s clients to keep them active.
After that we made them tea and biscuits and chatted with them for 15 minutes.
Then we played a few games such as a ring toss game.
After that it was lunch so we served them the food we had made.
We then played a few games of bingo after lunch before having one last tea break.
We then went home at roughly 2:00.

I really enjoyed ‘Take Your Daughter to Work Day’. We took the train to London and then got a taxi to Lavington Street. I did some research on insurance for my dad and met lots of new people. We had lunch in Flat Iron Square and I went along to a meeting about marketing. Afterwards, I was talking to a colleague about how to use some software. Then, I made a video about the company and helped set up the cheese and wine evening. It was really interesting and I loved meeting all the new people.
