In the best sunshine of the year families spread their blankets, opened their programmes and prepared to enjoy an evening of music and creativity. Students from Year 7 to Year 12 played and sang with confidence before an appreciative audience at the 4th annual Presdales Rocks.
As darkness fell and the lights came up, voices floated through the night and the applause echoed back. Two tribute songs had slipped unadvertised into the running order: it was Mr Burrell’s last ever Presdales Rocks and Miss Cheetham, Head of Music, had organised the Music staff into performing his all-time favourite son, ‘Watcher of the Skies’ by Genesis. Following that, the Junior Choir, led by Miss Mapplebeck, performed a song especially written by Georgie Gaudencio of Year 8 and her mother to mark the occasion.
Then came the Song Writing Competition, for some the most exciting part of the whole evening. Last year’s winner, Millie Robinson, opened this section with her song, ‘With You’, setting a high standard for this year’s competitors who gladly rose to the challenge. Judges Sam Lewis and Manuela Asamoah had the difficult task of choosing a winner. They awarded Anna Wilson third place; Emily Wilson second place; and Molly Farrell first place with her song, ‘Something I Never Knew’. Molly wins £100 and a recording session with Sam Lewis.
The evening ended with Miss Cheetham paying tribute to Mr Burrell as an inspiring Director of Music over the 25 years he has been at Presdales.
