European Week of Languages - September 2015
Friday, 25 September 2015
Our celebrations for the European Week of Languages were a huge success! It is a lovely occasion to give room to creativity and cultural experiences that go beyond the classroom. Whilst our lunch-time activities offer everyone the opportunity to have “a go” at bracelet making (French), “Lucky Dip” (German), decorating cakes and pancakes (Russian and Spanish), calligraphy (Japanese) and face painting (Italian), there is also a special focus in KS3 language lessons during European week.
This year’s lesson activities concentrated on the independent use of language in poetry. Just to give you a flavour: The French department ran a poetry competition which involved writing poems in the style of G. Apollinaire. In German girls re-wrote the “Hungry Caterpillar” story in German and in Italian girls created their own rhyming poems. In Russian lessons girls described Kandinsky pictures in the target language and beginners in Year 8 coloured in and labelled Russian style headdresses independently. Year 8 Spanish students designed poems using meeting and greeting vocabulary in the shape of a waving hand whereas Year 9 girls produced diamond-shaped poems involving adjectives which they looked up in a dictionary.
As always, we are very grateful for this opportunity and we would also like to say a big thank you to the kitchen team which, as in previous years, put on themed food during this special week.
